The Secure Enclave Services provided by the OVPR Research IT unit rely on the crucial role of college-level or local IT support in providing assistance to researchers and their projects. This support is vital to the success of the research process.
The role of college IT support for researchers in the enclave is vital for several reasons. First and foremost, researchers rely heavily on technology to conduct their studies, analyze data, and share findings. A robust IT support system ensures that researchers have the necessary tools and resources at their disposal, allowing them to focus on their work without the distraction of technical issues.
Furthermore, as research projects often involve complex software and advanced hardware, the presence of dedicated IT support can help troubleshoot and resolve challenges efficiently. This reduces downtime and enhances productivity, which is essential for meeting project deadlines and achieving research goals.
In addition, IT support fosters a collaborative environment by facilitating communication and data sharing among researchers. This interconnectedness is crucial for innovative research and interdisciplinary studies, as it encourages the exchange of ideas and resources.
Finally, with rapidly evolving technology, ongoing IT support is essential for keeping researchers updated on the latest tools and best practices. This investment in IT not only empowers researchers but also strengthens the overall research capabilities of the institution.
In summary, the importance of college IT support for researchers in the enclave cannot be overstated. It is essential for enhancing productivity, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that researchers can fully leverage technological advancements in their work.
The above points are key to ensuring that projects are set up and managed appropriately in the enclave and that researchers get the same level of support as they would have gotten on-premises. The below expectations ensure our research can continue to meet the high standards of a Carnegie R1 institution & federally mandated regulations to ensure continued funding.
The expectations from the College IT support team or local IT support are the following:
- Part of the regular responsibilities of the college-level or local IT support is to undergo annual training in FAR and CUI. This ensures their continuous learning and compliance with the latest standards.
- A continuous background check is required every three years.
- College IT/Local IT will be the "system administrators" of the enclaves for their researchers. System Administrator means the identified IT support staff will have access to the Enclaves for the identified projects.
- Another key responsibility of the college IT support team or local IT support is to assist in installing any specialized software required for researchers' projects. This includes managing updates and ensuring the software functions as intended. Will support any updates to specialized software. *RIT subsidizes a limited amount of storage in the enclave for the software and patches for the college IT/local IT to provide this support.
- Collete IT/Local IT support researchers and users in the enclave.
- It is the responsibility of the college IT support team or local IT support to manage any endpoint devices accessing the Secure Enclave. This includes ensuring these devices adhere to the proper security standards as identified by OVPR Research IT, DoIT or UCSD to meet CMMC L2 requirements.
- College IT/Local IT will provide an inventory of endpoint devices accessing the Secure Enclave at least yearly or when required for the System Security Plan.
- College IT/Local IT will support or submit tickets to UCSD or RIT on their behalf or for projects in their college.
The responsibilities may be updated periodically to reflect feedback or updates required as more projects, regulations or CSU/UCSD process or policy changes.
