WinSCP - Transferring Files To/From Sherlock Using WinSCP (UCSD Preferred Method)

The idle time out period is 10 minutes and then you will be logged out of the Secure Enclave.

Sherlock recommends using WinSCP application to securely transfer files over SFTP.

Work with Research IT and Secure and Global Research for handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) locally.

CSU identifies the Sherlock Secure Enclave as being the only appropriate storage location for CUI - this guide is intended for reference on downloading CUI into the Secure Enclave from a Sponsor or their secure data store.

Unless approved by SGR with an approved system, CUI should not be transferred, stored, or processed by a local workstation outside of the Secure Enclave.

Instructions for Installing WinSCP for SFTP data transfers

1. Download the latest WinSCP installer from https://winscp.net/eng/download.php

2. Install Winscp application following install instructions.

3. Launch WinSCP application

4. Select New Site and fill in the information below:

File Protocol: SFTP

Host name: mft.sdsc.edu (The host name may change)

Port: (The port # will be assigned)

Username: <Your Sherlock AD username>

5. Save your settings. Save as CSU01

6. Select CSU01 and click Login.

7. When you initiate the connection to the site, you will see the message below. Select yes to continue.

8. Select continue to close the Authentication Banner.

9. Enter your Sherlock AD password when prompted.

Enter 1 when prompted with “Enter the RSA SecurID token to complete authentication”. Accept the Duo push notification on your phone.

10. When you have successfully logged in, it should look similar to below. The left side shows your local file system, the right side shows your files on the remote site. To upload files, you can drag and drop files or folders from the left side to the right. To download, you can drag and drop files or folders from the right side to the left.

11. Files will appear on your M: drive on your Virtual Desktop under the "Usr" directory in the Secure Enclave

12. The M: drive is a holding area to and from Sherlock. Once data has been uploaded to the M: drive it needs to be moved to the S: Drive and Deleted from the M:" Drive. If the data was downloaded or transferred from the Secure Enclave, once it has been transferred it needs to be deleted from the M: drive.
